Alu Dum

We went to Boston this weekend to surprise my SIL and her family. Her MIL had given her this easy to do recipe of Alu Dum which she and her husband made for dinner on saturday. This recipe is different from the usual. In the usual recipe we would blend some ingredients and then fry them, but this one is just the opposite and does not require too much oil.

Ingredients: (Serves 2)

baby potatoes (10 nos) / Big potatoes (4 nos) - boiled
1 onion
1 tomato
1 green chilly
jeera seeds
garam masala
turmeric powder
red chilly powder
salt
oil
corriander leaves to garnish

Method:

Peel and cut the boiled into 8 pieces if you are using the big potatoes. If you are using baby potatoes do not cut them. Use a matchstick to make small holes in the potato so that it will absorb the salt from the gravy when we add them finally. Heat a pan with exactly 2 teaspoons oil and add the jeera seeds. Add the onions, tomatoes and green chilly and fry them. Add the turmeric and chilly powder to it. Once fried, blend them into a smooth paste/ gravy. Use the pan and add the blended mixture and add salt, garam masala and more chilly powder if you like it spicy. Add the potatoes and let it cook for some more time. Once the Gravy reaches your consistency add corriander leaves and serve hot with rotis and rice. Some people even like to eat with toasted bread.

  1. Instead of a matchstick, u can prick designs with a fork to make it look nice. We do that with boiled eggs while cooking them in gravies.

  2. That should be a killer. Many really don't know how to make this one, perhaps because they don't know what goes into it! Perhaps...
